Public Health
Overview
This program has an interdisciplinary focus, weaving together physiological, sociological and epidemiological perspectives on major health issues. Public Health considers health from the perspective of communities—from a neighbourhood to national and international levels.
You will learn about the health status of populations, inequities in health, determinants of health and illness, strategies for health promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, and factors that influence the delivery and use of health services.
Individuals interested in this specialization will apply directly to Public Health through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using application code DHU.
As a new international student, I studied Year 1 in Health Sciences completely online from a country with an eight-hour time difference. It was a different shift than what I am used to, but I had a number of understanding professors who worked closely with me to aid in my success, as well as support from tutors, academic advisors and international advisors just a click away. I was still able to have a strong connection with my peers and professors, even though I was not physically on campus. I am excited to see what my next year brings and cannot wait to see Â鶹´«Ã½’s beautiful campus in person.

Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits including English (ENG4U) with a minimum grade of 60 per cent, Biology (SBI4U) and one of Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U) or Mathematics of Data Management (MDM4U).
Note: Admission is competitive. The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year to year. Students are selected by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria including school marks, distribution of subjects taken, and performance in subjects relevant to the academic program. Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.

Career opportunities
Individuals trained in public health will be prepared to work in areas of operations, management, and planning in a variety of healthcare sectors and fields including:
- Community health co-ordinator
- Environmental health officer
- Graduate studies in Health Science or professional programs (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medicine or chiropractic)
- Injury prevention specialist
- Occupational health and safety co-ordinator
- Public and non-profit sector administration and/or policy development
Experiential learning
Students in all Health Sciences programs can apply for a fourth-year Research Practicum that extends throughout their final year of studies. Working under the direction of a research tutor, both university- and community-based, you receive a practical experience that exemplifies the collaborative research process while providing you with a valued opportunity to apply your knowledge in a research setting.
