Electrical Engineering
Overview
Prepare yourself to power the future! Learn about the design and development of technologies and the integration of electrical components into complex systems. If you're interested in applying to the Electrical Engineering program without co-op, apply via the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) using OUAC code DEE.
If you're interested in applying to the Electrical Engineering (Co-op) program, apply via OUAC code DCE.
Our Electrical Engineering program teaches students to apply knowledge through analysis, design and implementation of electrical, power, control, electronic, biomedical, photonic and wireless systems. The curriculum assists students in understanding and applying the principles of electrical engineering and of the Canadian electrical engineering industry.
Foundation year
All engineering students begin with a common foundation year, regardless of the program of study. During the foundation year, you will learn about the various engineering programs available.
Smart Grid
The Smart Grid specialization leverages communications and networking technology to move our ageing power grid into the 21st century. You will study all aspects of the smart grid, including networking and security, smart metering, electric energy storage systems, power quality and transportation electrification.
Engineering and Management
There is a need for engineers with management skills. Complement the technical studies of your engineering program with business and management courses by pursuing the five-year Bachelor of Engineering and Management (Honours) program.
Women in Engineering
A multi-year support program to help female engineering students explore opportunities and careers, gain experience in the workforce, make a successful transition to a career in engineering and find lifelong success in a professional engineering career.
Learning environment
Students have access to new, modern buildings, libraries and innovative labs, including
- ACE Facilities
- Energy Systems and Nuclear Science Research Centre (ERC)
- Jeffery Boyce Engineering Innovation and Design Studio
- Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Engineering Building
- Software and Informatics Research Center (SIRC)
When deciding where to study engineering, there were many factors I considered. For me, Â鶹´«Ã½ was the stand-out school for each one. The university’s industry connections stood out—Hydro One and Ontario Power Generation to name a couple—which was important to me. You learn from upper-year students during your placements and also know that these reputable companies trust the university. Â鶹´«Ã½ also goes above and beyond to support their female engineering students. Isabel Smith Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering Class of 2024
Admissions
Admissions
Current Ontario secondary school students must complete the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six 4U or 4M credits including English (ENG4U) with a minimum grade of 60 per cent, Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Calculus and Vectors (MCV4U), Chemistry (SCH4U) and Physics (SPH4U). In addition, a combined minimum of 70 per cent average in prerequisite math and science courses is required, with no grade below 60 percent. Applicants with credentials from outside Ontario should visit the Admissions section.
Note: Admission is competitive. The specific average or standing required for admission varies from year to year. Students are selected by taking into consideration a wide range of criteria including school marks, distribution of subjects taken and performance in subjects relevant to the academic program. Possession of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. Preference will be given to applicants with the best qualifications.
