Overview

Providing quality safe health care is a priority in the Canadian health system. Interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) supports this priority. Quality medical laboratory (ML) services are dependent upon the collaboration of professionals inside (i.e., ML technologists and ML assistants) and outside (e.g., physicians, midwives, epidemiologists, etc.) of the ML. Interprofessional education (IPE) supports professional development that is based on the establishment of learning goals, self-reflection, and competency evaluation. In addition, IPE provides training for skills that employers look for to ensure that new learners and the existing workforce are prepared to work with other providers to support quality patient outcomes.

  • Cultural Humility and Indigenous Peoples IEML 1060C
    • To better understand the concepts of cultural humility and Indigenous peoples. This will allow the learners to become aware and open to the experiences involving culture and in particular Indigenous peoples.
    • To understand how the Truth & Reconciliation in 2008 influences the health of Indigenous communities. This will be done by having the learners read two articles and reflect on how cultural humility affects real-life interactions with Indigenous peoples.
    • To hear about a unique personal experience with Indigenous peoples and how practicing cultural humility positively affects relationships.

Program Information

  • Course Structure
    Self paced. Learners will be prompted to complete each activity within the unit, including a knowledge test before progressing to the next activity.

    This Certificate program consists of seven micro-credentials. Each micro-credential is a stackable unit that focuses on a specific area of Interprofessional Education.  The training duration for each micro-credential is approximately 15 hours, which includes:
    • Instructional time
    • Interactive activities
    • Background material review (e.g., case studies, reading materials)
    • Assessments
    Upon completion, participants will receive a badge for each micro-credential.  Upon successful completion of all 7 micro-credentials, participants will receive a University Certificate.

Micro-credentials

This micro-credential program offers seven stackable virtual micro-credentials to provide ML professionals with an interprofessional education (IPE) experience to support the acquisition of IPCP competencies and to support professional development. The introductory module which is mandatory provides a brief overview of the history of IPCP and IPE, and highlights the role of ML professionals in IPCP. Subsequent modules focus on role clarification, team functioning, interprofessional communication, interprofessional conflict resolution, collaborative leadership, cultural humility and Indigenous Peoples. Each of these micro-credentials follow a similar format, pre and post-test, information on the competency domain and how it relates to IPCP, a guided reading, a case study, a simulation game, and a self-debriefing activity.

Participants may choose to complete one or more micro-credential. For each micro-credential completed the participant will receive a badge. This is a self-paced learning experience. Upon successful completion of all seven micro-credentials, participants will receive a University Certificate.

Who is eligible for OSAP micro-credentials?

OSAP for Micro-credentials is available for eligible students taking a ministry-approved micro-credential that is less than 12 weeks. To be eligible for OSAP for Micro-credentials, a student must be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident, or a protected person; and, be a resident of Ontario.
