Annual Durham Regional Science Fair open for registration

The organizers in the Faculty of Science at Â鶹´«Ã½ University are getting ready to host young scientists from the region at the annual Durham Regional Science Fair (DRSF) on Saturday, April 5, in the Business and Information Technology Building.

Students must compete at a local Regional Science Fair like the DRSF to be eligible to compete as a finalist at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), the annual national science fair hosted by Youth Science Canada (YSC).

The DRSF is open to all students in grades 4 to 12 who live in Durham Region (Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge) who are enrolled in public or private schools or are home-schooled. Participants do not have to have participated (or won) at any other science fairs (e.g. at their schools, libraries or other local organizations). They can enter the DRSF directly with a project that they completed in school or that they did on their own while pursuing a special interest. Projects on topics in science, technology, engineering, math, computer science, environmental science and sustainability are all eligible to complete in the DRSF.

is open until Thursday, April 3, at 11:59 p.m. There is a registration fee of $10 (CAD) for each participant. This fee applies to each participant with an individual project as well as each student in a project with a pair of presenters. A maximum number of two presenters is permitted for each science fair project.

After the set-up and judging of the projects in the morning of Saturday, April 5, the DRSF is open to the public in the afternoon (1 to 2:30 p.m.) for viewing projects and talking to participants. Prizes, medals, and scholarships will be presented in each of four grade categories: elementary (grades 4 to 6), junior (grades 7 and 8), intermediate (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12). Students in grades 7 to 12 are eligible to win an all-expense paid trip to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair being held at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, N.B. from Saturday, May 31 to Saturday, June 7; this prize alone is worth more than $2,000 per participant.
