Campus signage and wayfinding project update: Business and IT Building code changes to BIT

In early 2023, Â鶹´«Ã½ launched its Campus Signage and Wayfinding Project with a campuswide audit of all existing signage. Following a period of comprehensive consultation, the physical signage updates are now rolling out across campus.

The Communications and Marketing department continues to work with the Office of Campus Infrastructure and Sustainability and other involved parties in each building to prepare for the transition to the new system of updated building codes that will improve wayfinding on campus.

Completed to date:

  • Shawenjigewining Hall (SHA)
  • Charles Hall (CHA)
  • Energy Research Centre (ERC)
  • Software and Informatics Research Centre (SIR)
  • Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE)
  • OPG Engineering Building (ENG)
  • Clean Energy Research Lab (CER)
  • Business and IT Building (BIT) formerly referred to as UB. The UB designation is discontinued, effective immediately

As they were part of the university’s earliest infrastructure, the Science Building and the Business and Information Technology Building required additional preparation, including a wall-surface retrofit to replace some of the original 20-year-old acoustic panels and bulletin-board wall finishes. A painted drywall finish has been introduced in these areas, which brings the buildings in line with the completed interiors in other university buildings by brightening up the corridors and atriums, while providing a clean and suitable surface for new signage.

Wayfinding updates in-progress in the Science Building

Currently underway is the transformation of the Science Building (UA) and once it is updated with the new wayfinding system, the building code will change to SCI, and the UA designation will be retired. This is expected to be complete this Spring.

A wayfinding and signage system that works well often goes unnoticed. The goal is to carry guests, students, faculty, staff from Simcoe Street or Conlin Road all the way to an office, classroom, lab or event without them needing to ask for directions. It’s an exciting opportunity to update the entire campus to an accurate and functioning system following 20 years of amazing growth.
