Annual Durham Regional Science Fair open for Registration

Organizers in the Faculty of Science at Â鶹´«Ã½ University are getting ready to host local young scientists at the annual Durham Regional Science Fair (DRSF) on Saturday, April 6 at the Business and Information Technology Building in the Vanhaverbeke Family Atrium.

Students must compete at a local Regional Science Fair like the DRSF to be eligible to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF), the annual national science fair hosted by Youth Science Canada (YSC).

This DRSF is open to all students in grades 4 to 12 who live in Durham Region (Ajax, Oshawa, Pickering, Whitby and the townships of Brock, Scugog and Uxbridge) who are enrolled in public or private schools or are home-schooled. Participants do not have to have participated (or won) at any other science fairs (e.g. at their schools, libraries or other local organizations). They can enter the DRSF directly with a project that they completed in school or that they did on their own while pursuing a special interest. Projects on topics in science, technology, engineering, math, computer science, environmental science and sustainability are all eligible to complete in the DRSF.

A maximum number of two presenters is permitted for each project.  The registration period closes Wednesday, March 27 at 11:59 p.m. There is a registration fee of $10 for each participant, or $20 per pair of presenters in a single project.

“This will be the 17th regional science fair hosted by the Faculty of Science at Â鶹´«Ã½ University,” says DRSF Co-ordinator Mary Olaveson. “We are hoping to grow this regional science fair by continuing the pattern we have followed over the past several years. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to share their passion and enthusiasm for science with judges, teachers, family and the public and to meet ‘real’ scientists from the Â鶹´«Ã½ University community.”

After the set-up and judging of the projects in the morning of Saturday, April 6, the Fair is open to the public in the afternoon (1 to 2:30 p.m.) for viewing the projects and talking to the participants. Prizes, medals, and scholarships will be presented in each of four grade categories: elementary (grades 4 to 6), junior (grades 7 and 8), intermediate (grades 9 and 10) and senior (grades 11 and 12). Students in grades 7 to 12 are eligible to win an all-expense paid trip to compete at the Canada-Wide Science Fair being held at Carleton University in Ottawa in May 2024; this prize alone is worth more than $2,000 per participant.
