Treaties Recognition Week, which takes place annually in Ontario during the first week of November, honours the treaties between Indigenous nations and the Crown over the last 250 years.

Understanding the spirit and intent of treaty relationships is important for building new relationships of mutual respect and benefit between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.  

In honour of , Indigenous Education and Cultural Services at Â鶹´«Ã½ University invites faculty, staff and students to participate in the Moccasin Identifier Project on Tuesday, November 8.

Dr. Carolyn King, former Chief of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, and Dave Mowat, current Chief of Alderville First Nation, will discuss the significant cultural historic sites and the ancestral presence of First Nations, Métis, and Indigenous communities. Participants will then head to the North Oshawa Library to take part in a moccasin-stenciling activity. Snacks will be provided.

  • Energy Research Centre, Atrium:
    • 1 to 1:20 p.m.: Presentation by Dr. Carolyn King on the , a teaching tool and program for building public awareness about treaties.
    • 1:20 to 1:45 p.m.: Presentation by Chief Dave Mowat about treaties.
  • Outside of the North Oshawa Library:
    • 1:45 to 2:30 p.m.: Stencilling of moccasins, and closing remarks
