Retirement announcement: Mary Steele

Mary Steele, Manager, Pension, Benefits and Wellness will retire from Â鶹´«Ã½ University at the end of April.

Mary joined the university in April of 2011 and has contributed immeasurably to the development of a sound governance model for our pension plan and the expansion of our benefit programs. During her tenure at the university, Mary promoted the importance of sound pension education for plan members and has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure employees are well-informed about their pension options and understand the unique attributes of our benefit programs.

Mary’s deep passion for mental health has driven her to develop programming at the university that has changed the organization for the better and provided much-needed support for leaders, staff and faculty at the institution. Her commitment to improving employee wellness led to the creation of the university’s Healthy Workplace Committee (HWC). This group of like-minded employees share the same passion for improving the employee experience, which has resulted in the promotion of many engaging wellness initiatives.

Mary’s leadership on the HWC has fostered important connections within the organization and critical partners in Durham Region to support wellness programming, and her leadership has led to accolades from the wellness community including winning the Gold Standard Healthy Workplace Award from 2014 to 2018.

Mary will leave behind a strong pension education strategy, competitive benefit programs and a wellness platform on which the university can continue to build. As she enters her retirement years, our university will continue to profit from the strong foundation Mary has implemented for pension, benefits and wellness.

At this time, we are unable to celebrate Mary’s accomplishments and contributions with a gathering on campus. If you wish to share your best wishes with Mary, we invite you to visit this and leave a message or memory for her to enjoy.

We thank Mary for her service to the university and wish her the best for a well-deserved retirement.
