Recent presentation and journal publications by FSSH researcher Dr. Thomas McMorrow

Dr. Thomas McMorrow, Associate Professor, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities recently presented on an international panel and published two journal articles about Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) in Canada. 

Presentation:

  • End of Life Decisions: Comparing New Perspectives, University of Trento, Italy, May 12.

Dr. McMorrow discusses legislation in Canada and the United States related to end-of-life decision-making. Other presenters addressed legal developments in Germany, Austria and Spain. (segment beings at 10:35).

Journal articles:

Both articles arise from interdisciplinary research (medicine, law, and socio-legal studies) on the experiences of MAiD providers.

  • examines how MAiD practitioners in Canada responded to restrictions put in place because of the COVID-19 pandemic alongside their existing legal obligations and commitments as MAiD providers.
  • examines how clinicians assess capacity in people requesting medical assistance in dying.
