Join the Fall 2020 virtual Book Club
The Book Club provides an opportunity for faculty and staff to engage in learning and professional development by:
- Reading a book.
- Getting together with colleagues to explore new ideas.
- Networking with others.
- Discussing the content of the book.
- Creating an action plan to apply learning at work and in life.
Participants will meet online three times as a group; attendance at all three sessions is essential. Sessions focus on discussion about the contents and themes of the book, sharing thoughts about how the ideas presented in the book may be applied within the university community.
This fall’s book is , by Malcolm Gladwell. It explores questions such as:
- Why are some people brilliant decision makers, while others are consistently inept?
- Why do some people follow their instincts and win, while others end up stumbling into error?
- How do our brains really work in the office, in the classroom, and in the kitchen?
- Why are the best decisions often those that are impossible to explain to others?
Blink reveals that great decision-makers aren't those who process the most information or spend the most time deliberating, but those who have perfected the art of ‘thin-slicing’: filtering the very few factors that matter from an overwhelming number of variables.
Each person receives a personal copy of the book (theirs to keep), along with guided questions to consider for discussion with the larger group.
All sessions take place on Google Meet (participants will receive the link once they register), from 3 to 4 p.m. on:
- Wednesday, October 14
- Tuesday, November 17
- Monday, December 7
