Panel discussion on hate, bias and extremism – July 28

On Tuesday, July 28, Facebook Canada and Â鶹´«Ã½ University will co-host a virtual panel discussion on hate, bias and extremism.

The event will kick off with a special announcement from Dr. Steven Murphy, President and Vice-Chancellor, Â鶹´«Ã½ University, and Kevin Chan, Public Policy Director, Facebook Canada.

A panel discussion entitled Incel: The Rising Threat of Misogyny and Violence will follow, moderated by Dr. Barbara Perry, Director of the Centre on Hate, Bias and Extremism and Professor, Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.

Panel discussion details:

The 2019 deaths of 10 people run down by a rented van in downtown Toronto brought to the forefront the very real dangers of what has come to be known as the Incel movement. Originally an online ‘lonely hearts’ group established by a young woman experiencing relationship difficulties, the diverse collective of ‘involuntary celibates’ (‘incels’) has grown into a subculture with violent potential. At the extreme end of the movement are angry males whose freely express their misogyny across social media platforms. Sadly, as the Toronto attack and other similar incidents reveal, this hatred of women has crossed into offline violence against the very women the perpetrators desire.

Join academics, representatives from civil society and industry, and policymakers as they discuss the threat and responses to the growth of the Incel movement in Canada.

  • When: Tuesday, July 28 beginning 10 a. m.
  • Where:  (Â鶹´«Ã½ Facebook page).
