Electrical and computing power outage – Saturday, July 4
The Office of Campus Infrastructure and Sustainability (OCIS) reminds the campus community that this year’s power outage for electrical preventive maintenance at the north Oshawa location is scheduled for Saturday, July 4 from approximately 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
University buildings currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will remain closed. Please do not schedule campus-related activities during the maintenance period, as no telecommunication or computer service, and only minimal emergency power, will be available. This means no employee, student, research or visitor activities can take place at the north Oshawa location.
Faculty and staff should plan their work and make provisions for this outage. If you need to arrange access to campus to ensure critical equipment related to your active research is connected to emergency receptacles or power, you must fill out the prior to the outage. You may also fill out this form to request access to your lab as early as Sunday, July 5 (preferably between 9 and 11 a.m.) to restart your equipment for research purposes. Note: Please provide at least 48 hours’ notice. You will need approval from your Dean or Vice-President before submitting the form.
If you have a project or research underway that the power outage would negatively affect, and for which no alternative plan is possible, contact Ken Bright, Director, OCIS, to determine whether backup power can be arranged.
The power outage will affect cooling systems, meaning much of the university’s information technology (IT) network will be down during this period. Some systems may be able to continue on backup power; however, this depends on how the day goes, and cannot be guaranteed. If your research project requires continuous computing/power, you should consider options that can sustain a 12-hour outage. If this is not possible, contact Reem Ali, Manager, Technology-Enriched Learning, IT Services, for assistance in IT planning.
For your advanced planning, the next scheduled electrical maintenance at the north Oshawa location will occur in July 2021.
Thank you for your patience and assistance in preparing for this service disruption.
