University hosts another successful Mental Health Week
Â鶹´«Ã½ University’s (HWC) thanks everyone who participated and dedicated their time and expertise to support the university’s 2020 Mental Health Week.
Most of us know at least one person who has struggled with mental health challenges at some point in their lives. According to the , one in five Canadians experiences a mental health issue every year. This year, we have experienced a pandemic with unprecedented events that have affected everyone in some form, including their mental health.
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Week in Canada, the university’s HWC hosted a series of workshops designed to support the mental health of faculty and staff as they navigate through this unprecedented time. Led by experts from the university and the community, the workshops aimed to help reduce mental illness stigma and increase resiliency by providing opportunities for the campus community to share information and become more aware of available mental-health resources.
Workshops included:
- Stress Management and Mental Health Enhancement – Jack Veitch, Manager of Community Engagement and Education, (Â鶹´«Ã½ graduate)
- Sleep and Mental Health – Dr. Efrosini Papaconstantinou, Assistant Professor, (FHSc)
- Creating a Financial Road Map - Sara Zollo, Financial Advisor,
- Staying the Course - Sara Zollo, Financial Advisor,
- Mindfulness and Meditation – Dr. Wendy Stanyon, Associate Professor, FHSc
The university also . Dr. Stanyon developed as a free, easy-to-use online educational resource designed to reduce stigma by promoting awareness of mental illness, and facilitating a greater understanding of basic strategies and resources for supporting individuals experiencing a mental-health challenge.
