Online scam of the week: Post-holiday shopping scam

The holiday season has come and gone but scammers are still using holiday shopping deals to lure you in. Posing as popular retailers, hackers send emails and text messages directing you to claim the reward points you’ve supposedly earned with your holiday purchases.

By clicking on these fraudulent links, you are actually downloading malware to your computer or phone, which allows hackers to gain access to your device, leaving your personal information at risk.

Follow these tips from Â鶹´«Ã½’s Information Technology Services department to keep yourself safe from brand impersonation attacks:

  • Never click on links in an email or text message you weren’t expecting.
  • When you receive an email or text message asking you to log in to an account or online service, only log in through an Internet browser—not directly through links in the email or text message. This way, you can be sure you’re logging into the real website.

Don’t be fooled: Think before you click!
