  • The average person throws away 37 kilograms of textiles each year, 95 per cent of which could be reused or recycled.
  • Eight million tonnes of plastic flows into our oceans every year: the equivalent of one garbage truck full of plastic being dumped into our oceans every minute.
  • Nearly three billion single-use plastic bags are used in Canada each year.
  • In a study published in , researchers estimate since the 1950s 8.3 billion tonnes of plastic has been generated around the world and only nine per cent of those plastics have been recycled. An additional estimated 12 billion tonnes of plastic will be lost to disposal by 2050.
  • An easy way to cut down on the amount of single-use plastics you use is by using a travel mug or reusable water bottle.
  • Tim Horton coffee cups and Starbucks cups are not recyclable on campus; bring a travel mug and receive a discount!
