Update on university’s budget
The Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) announced its on January 17, which includes a 10 per cent decrease in tuition for 2019-2020 with a freeze in the following year. Despite these fiscal challenges, the university will continue to work diligently to bring ideas forward to government in order to minimize the impact on the quality of the learning experience.
With the clarity provided by the MTCU, we will continue with our budget preparations. Budget holders are expected to exercise restraint in operating spending throughout the remainder of the current budget year. To this end we have implemented a hiring and travel freeze until further notice. Questions about the freeze should be directed to your supervisor.
In the meantime, budget holders across the university have been asked to explore innovative ways of doing business within their areas that will enable us to make progress on our strategic priorities while minimizing impacts on our students, faculty and staff. We want your input too. If you have innovative ideas to help the university with cost savings, please share them with us at budget@uoit.ca.
