Sexual violence response and prevention training now available

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology takes very seriously the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, staff and other members of the campus community. We strive to be a place where people are able to study, work, connect and grow personally and intellectually without fear of violence or harassment of any kind.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act was amended in 2016 to include new legislation: Bill 132, the Sexual Violence and Harassment Action Plan. The legislation requires every employer in Ontario to take specific steps to prevent and manage workplace sexual violence and harassment, including implementing a policy and program.

The university has developed two policies addressing sexual violence and harassment: one for students and one for faculty and staff.

In response to this call-to-action, the university has made available two training modules for faculty and staff, which support the university’s effort to create awareness about these policies and prevent sexual violence on our campus.

The first module, Sexual Violence Education and Prevention Training, focuses on:

  • How to receive and support a sexual violence disclosure at the university.
  • The process for reporting incidents of sexual violence.
  • The supports on and off campus that are available to students and employees of the university.

The second module, Responding to Disclosures of Sexual Violence, was developed with funding support provided through Ontario’s Action Plan to Stop Sexual Violence. Western University created this module in partnership with George Brown and an advisory committee with representatives from a number of colleges and universities. Provided to colleges and universities in Ontario, this training employs scenario-based interactive learning about how to respond to disclosures of sexual violence.

We care for one another as colleagues and as human beings. We are invested in making our university a safe, welcoming and positive place. The university strongly encourages you to complete these training modules and support our ongoing efforts to collectively oppose all forms of sexual violence on our campus.
