Orange Shirt Day to promote awareness of residential school history – September 28
Orange Shirt Day is an event designed to educate people and promote awareness about Canada’s former residential school system and the impact this system had on Indigenous communities for more than a century. Since 2013, the Orange Shirt campaign has provided all Canadians with an opportunity to participate in a collective act of reconciliation.
While Sunday, September 30 (the date many Indigenous children were taken from their homes and placed in residential schools) is national Orange Shirt Day, the campus community is designating Friday, September 28 as the day to promote awareness at the university. By wearing an orange shirt, you can help raise awareness about the campaign.
An Orange Shirt Day group photo will be taken in the Science Building Atrium on Friday at 3 p.m. President Steven Murphy is scheduled to attend. Everyone in an orange shirt is invited to join the photo.
Throughout the week, members of the university’s team will be available to share more information:
- Tuesday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (Science Building, Atrium)
- Wednesday, September 26 from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. (61 Charles Street Building)
- Thursday, September 27 from 2 to 5 p.m. (Science Building, Atrium)
