Learn how to facilitate a mindfulness session

In the coming months, the university’s , together with , Associate Professor, , will offer faculty and staff a chance to participate in a discussion on how to facilitate mindfulness and meditation sessions on campus.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where you are and what you are doing, and to not overly react or become overwhelmed by what is going on around us. American professor and mindfulness expert , founder and former Director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, helped bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into mainstream health care. Mindfulness is not a religion; anyone, with any belief system, can enjoy its benefits, many of them research-based.

What are the benefits of mindfulness?

  • Improved well-being. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mindfulness find they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past. They are less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connections with others.
  • Improved physical health. If greater well-being isn’t enough of an incentive, scientists have discovered that mindfulness techniques can help improve physical health in a number of ways. It can help relieve stress, lower blood pressure, reduce chronic pain and improve sleep.
  • Improved mental health. In recent years, mindfulness meditation has become an important element in the treatment of a number of mental health challenges including: anxiety, depression, and substance use.
