IT security reminder: phishing awareness

Information Technology (IT) Services reminds faculty and staff to be vigilant about email messages they receive in their inboxes.

The university will never send you an email asking for your account information, or asking you to visit a link to log in to your account.

Scammers attempt to trick users by mimicking legitimate services through a technique known as phishing: sending malicious emails to trick people into providing sensitive information like usernames, passwords or even credit card information.

Be suspicious of emails that:

  • Ask you to enter personal information.
  • Are sent from an email address that does not belong to the company the email claims to come from.
  • Ask for urgent action, such as:
    • “Call this number now.”
    • “Visit this link to verify your credentials.”
  • Contain spelling/grammatical errors.
  • Are threatening in nature.
  • Include different or incorrect company logos.
  • Are not addressed to you personally.
