Indigenous Education and Cultural Services to host Visiting Elder – February 5 to 9

Indigenous Education and Cultural Services will welcome Kukdookaa Terri Brown to the UOIT-Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre (UBISC) as part of the university’s Visiting Elder program Monday, February 5 through Friday, February 9.

Elder Brown is from the Tahltan First Nation in northwestern British Columbia, and is a survivor of the Canada’s Residential Schools system. Since obtaining her Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, Elder Brown has engaged in Indigenous community economic development, as well as the employment advancement of Indigenous women. She served as President of the Native Women's Association of Canada and initiated the campaign, a research, education and policy initiative driven and led by Indigenous women, with the goal of raising awareness of the alarming high rates of violence against Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

During her visit, she will be available for one-on-one appointments with students, faculty and staff. She will also lead a lunch-and-learn session at UBISC on Monday, February 5 from noon to 1 p.m.

The Visiting Elder program provides an opportunity to meet and learn from an Indigenous Elder. Elders are important members of the First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities, and are recognized for the considerable knowledge they carry, and the life experience of wisdom, harmony and balance they are able to share with others.
