Challenges, Resilience, and the Foundations of Wellness in Indigenous Children and Youth - February 16
The Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FSSH) Criminology Graduate Committee, FSSH Speakers Series and the Baagwating Indigenous Student Centre will welcome Christopher Mushquash, PhD, C. Psych., Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Mental Health and Addiction and Associate Professor, Lakehead University to campus on Friday, February 16.
Dr. Mushquash has expertise in the development of culturally appropriate methods and interventions to address risky behaviours among First Nations youth, particularly in rural and northern communities. He will present a talk entitled Challenges, Resilience, and the Foundations of Wellness in Indigenous Children and Youth.
An Indigenous scholar who was born and raised in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, Dr. Mushquash has experience working with specific communities to understand the factors that enable them to best support the aspirations of their youth and to promote effective coping in the face of challenges. He brings expertise on Indigenous research methodologies as well as on strategies for working collaboratively with Indigenous community members to develop research questions, methods, and knowledge mobilization plans that are inclusive, supportive, and useful to community partners. He received the Canadian Psychological Association President’s New Researcher Award in 2013.
